Out on a Weevil hunt [for slayers_desire]

Cardiff at night is a very different beast than it is during the day. The streets are mostly empty of people, the lights around the city staying lit despite the absence, and the sound of the sea is ever so slightly louder without the noise of traffic to drown it out.

Jack is alone in the Hub as usual, monitoring the Rift while the rest of the team sleep at home. He looks up at the sound of Mainframe's chime, and gets up to look at the readouts. "Weevils on the loose, huh?"

Hunting Weevils alone is generally dangerous, and while Jack doesn't fear death at their claws, it would be rather inconvenient. Fortunately, he knows just who to call.

"Jack continue to make your way to the Hub." April channels her psychic powers, creating several mental duplicates of the small group, hoping to distract the Weevils long enough to make a difference.

Jack hauls the Weevil along a little faster, not looking back, although he does keep the Weevil spray handy in his spare hand. If he is attacked, it likely won't be enough to hold off all of them. And he definitely doesn't want this Weevil escaping while it's cuffed. That could be a death sentence for it.

The group of Weevils stop and sniff the air, growling. They don't like what they smell, and the faint scent of a greater predator frightens them, but they also want to be with their lost one.

They are afraid of me... it is stopping them from their own primal urge

April knows that she can project sight and sounds, so concentrates on projecting her scent. Extend it out the Weevils, trying to keep them wary from approaching.

The Weevils become even more agitated by the stronger scent, and fight between the desire to turn back and the need to bring their lost ones home. One of them crouches down, eyeing April in fear. Another roars defiance. The third still sniffs, trying to determine where their lost ones are.

Jack reaches the tourist office and hauls the Weevil inside. He doesn't want to waste time getting it down to the cells, so he cuffs it to the desk. "Sorry, Ianto," Jack mutters as he leaves the Weevil there, knowing it'll likely trash the orderly desk trying to escape.

April approaches the one that roared in defiance. In the predator world, the strong prove themselves by meeting challenges by others.

"Come on then... I will reunite you with your lost ones."

The other two Weevils cower back as she approaches, but the third stands its ground. It's scared of her, but it also doesn't want to back down. It doesn't understand what she's saying, but anything coming close is potential prey, even one that smells so strongly of a darker predator. It snarls at her out of fear and challenge.

Jack hurries to the garage to ransack the van, going for the net guns. They might need them for taking down the other Weevils, and with April holding them at bay, there's an opportunity here.

April growls back, her fangs elongate and her eyes glow red. She is ready to accept the challenge, and waits for the Weevil to make the first move.

It charges at her, baring sharp teeth and slashing its claws at her. Weevils are at their most dangerous when they're up close, and especially in the dark, like it is now.

Jack can hear the sounds of angry Weevils from the garage and mutters a curse, digging deeper into the van's equipment to find the net guns.

Vampires are also at their most dangerous when they get in close combat, and they thrive on darkness. And it is not exception for April either...

She shifts into her shadow-mode when it slashings its claws at her, so the first attacks don't draw any blood. Then she comes out of shadow mode and delivers several quick blows to the creatures upper chest.

The Weevil may be determined and smart, but it is still little more than an animal, and so falls prey to her strikes without any kind of defensive stance to protect itself. It cries out at the blows, snapping its teeth at her in an attempt to bite her neck, the softest and easiest target on a human.

She grabs it by the jaw before it can bite her. The neck is a very sensitive spot for a vampire, and she knows how to defend herself from an attack there. Even if it means dealing with the teeth close and personal.

Plus, she doesn't want the Weevil to taste her blood. There is no knowing what might happen.

Then she quickly delivers a hard blow to the Weevil's nose.

It claws at her wrist where she's clutching it's jaw, before it's stunned by the blow. Weevil noses are flat, but still sensitive.

The other two Weevils cry out at the same time, feeling its pain. One makes a reflexive move towards the fighting pair, before reconsidering, still frightened by the strange predator.

April mentally notes that the other Weevil's react to the pain. They must be tied together through the hivemind.

She was injured by the Weevil, but the wound quickly heals.

Jack... I have defeated one of the three. The other two are too scared to attack me...

That might not last, Jack warns her, finally locating the net gun. He heads out of the garage to come join her again. Weevils recover fast. Be careful.

April quickly restrains the one who had attacked her. Watching the other two who are still close by.

She tries to reach out to them through the Hivemind.

The Weevils are upset and confused, first because of the disturbances in the Rift, and now because they are being captured and beaten by something stronger than themselves. They don't recognize the intrusion into the hivemind right away, as the feeling is lost amidst all the other strangeness they're experiencing.

Jack approaches with the net gun, aiming carefully at one of the other Weevils.

April projects a peaceful connection between all five Weevils, the three near her, and the two in the Hub. She ebbs away the pain, to try to calm them more.

She can see Jack approaching, and she keeps alert to see if either of the Weevil reacts.

The one who thought about attacking April snarls when it sees Jack, getting its hackles up again. It can smell his blood, and they've all seen enough of Torchwood to know that humans holding things isn't a good thing for Weevils.

Jack can tell it's getting twitchy, so he fires the net gun at it, draping a heavily-weighted net over the alien in a matter of moments. The Weevil snarls again, struggling against the net.

April approaches the third Weevil, the one most frightened of her, to quickly get it restrained too. She shouldn't have to hurt the creature, as long as it doesn't try to attack her.

It doesn't, only cowering away from her as she approaches, allowing itself to be captured.

"I think this is the most Weevils I've ever taken in at once," Jack says, spraying the one in the net to make it more docile.

"They react to eachother's pain." April tells him, once all the Weevils are properly restrained.

"I kind of expected that." Still, Jack prefers not to hurt them when he can avoid it. That's one reason he encouraged the development of the Weevil spray. It's unpleasant, but not harmful. Back when he first joined Torchwood, standard procedure was execution of all potential threats. Which included himself, at first.

"It's too bad they aren't intelligent enough to understand why we're doing this to them."

"They just don't have the capacity to understand. I really wish I could help reduce the amount of attacks..."

"Until we get someone who can speak Weevil, I think all we can do is contain and manage them." He's half-joking, because of course Weevils don't have a language. And while he doesn't enjoy playing prison warden, it's necessary to examine each Weevil before tagging, to learn as much as they can.

"I could try to get a better understanding of the Hivemind, if it would help."
