Out on a Weevil hunt [for slayers_desire]

Cardiff at night is a very different beast than it is during the day. The streets are mostly empty of people, the lights around the city staying lit despite the absence, and the sound of the sea is ever so slightly louder without the noise of traffic to drown it out.

Jack is alone in the Hub as usual, monitoring the Rift while the rest of the team sleep at home. He looks up at the sound of Mainframe's chime, and gets up to look at the readouts. "Weevils on the loose, huh?"

Hunting Weevils alone is generally dangerous, and while Jack doesn't fear death at their claws, it would be rather inconvenient. Fortunately, he knows just who to call.

"We have to hurry... I sense it is watching prey." April knows how dangerous a situation like that can be.

"Don't wait up for me," Jack encourages her. He knows she's faster than him, and if someone's life is in danger, he'd rather she get there sooner than him.

April sprints off, as fast as she can. She moves quickly to get to the Weevil, hoping to catch it before it goes after its prey.

Jack runs after her, though she quickly leaves him behind. Up ahead, the Weevil begins to charge at the couple on the street, coming at them from behind where they can't see it.

April moves quickly, tackling the creature before it can reach the couple. She has to be careful not to use any noticeable powers, with bystanders so close. But she can at least work to pin the creature underneath her.

The sound of the scuffle draws the couple's attention, and the girl gasps when she sees what looks like two people fighting.

The Weevil goes down hard, but attempts to buck her off, snarling.

April readjusts when the creature tries to buck her off, so she maintain a hold over the Weevil. She delivers a solid punch to its nose, remembering that it was a sensitive spot from her previous battle.

The Weevil howls in pain, and tries to bite at her hand blindly, though some of the fight goes out of it.

Jack finally arrives, toting his net gun. He flashes a grin at the couple. "Sorry to bother you, folks. Enjoy your night." They stare at him in confusion.

The teeth does scratch her hand, but fortunately it is not deep enough to draw blood. Or have any of April's blood get into the Weevil's mouth.

She aims another blow to knock the creature out, so that Jack can capture it properly.

The Weevil yelps again, moaning in submission, too stunned to fight back. Jack quickly snaps restraints around its wrists. "All right, let's get you back to your buddies," he says to the Weevils.

The couple are still watching, but by now the man recognizes Jack from local rumors. "Must be Torchwood," he mutters to his girlfriend. Neither of them know what Torchwood does, but they have a reputation for doing weird things in Cardiff, even though no one's supposed to know about them.

April stands, dusting herself off, when she overhears the comment from the male bystander. Obviously the work of Torchwood is making enough of a difference.

"Do you have a lot of close calls like that?" She asks Jack, as they escort the Weevil back to the Hub.

"Oh, yeah," Jack says with a shrug. "We try to stay on top of it but sometimes we don't even get there until someone's been chewed on a bit." He tries to make the tone a bit lighter, though there's not really any hiding the fact that sometimes people have died from Weevil attacks.

[slayers_desire]

She shivers slightly. She doesn't like to think about people who suffered that sort of death.

"There has to be a way to stop them..."

Jack spreads his hands a little, indicating his helplessness. "We can't control the Rift, so we couldn't send them home even if we knew where they come from. Most of the time they leave people alone, it's just times like these where it becomes a problem."

[slayers_desire]

"You do have a good team to handle the problems. At least theres that..."

[fractured_agent]

He's become hardened to it over the years, but he can tell it really bothers her. "Maybe with you helping us delve into the hivemind, we can get some clues on how to manage them better."

[slayers_desire]

The thing that bothers her the most is because this is such a common occurance, that it doesn't really effect Jack anymore.

"That would be great. And I am sure with the group of them... I will get a better feel of their hivemind."

They get back to the Hub, and lock the other Weevil up next to the others. Jack begins to get the tagging equipment together so they'll be able to track and study each of them after they're released.

The Weevils are still cowed by the scent of the vampire, and a bit upset that they can't be closer to each other, but at least they're in the same area now.

"They want to be closer to each other." April mentions to Jack, backing away from the cells so her scent doesn't upset them as much.

[fractured_agent]

"I can understand that," Jack says, a little sympathetically. A species with the sort of community that Weevils have would probably be most upset by being alone. "But we can't put them all in a cell together. Too hard to control once we go to set them free."

[slayers_desire]

April finds a place to sit down, opening her knapsack to pull out her thermos. "Where are they released?"

[fractured_agent]

"From what we can tell, there aren't any factions or family groups among them, so we just find a group and release them nearby." He approaches one of the cells and takes some readings with his wristcomp.

April quietly drinks her blood, refreshing herself from the fight, as Jack takes his readings. She takes this opportunity to tune into the Hivemind again.

"Too bad they can't be kept in one area."

[fractured_agent]

He pauses a moment, and looks over at her. "You mean like a zoo?"

[slayers_desire]

"I think that a more an accurate reference would be Weevil sanctuary..." Mostly said because zoo means cages, and people coming to look and gawk.
