Out on a Weevil hunt [for slayers_desire]

Cardiff at night is a very different beast than it is during the day. The streets are mostly empty of people, the lights around the city staying lit despite the absence, and the sound of the sea is ever so slightly louder without the noise of traffic to drown it out.

Jack is alone in the Hub as usual, monitoring the Rift while the rest of the team sleep at home. He looks up at the sound of Mainframe's chime, and gets up to look at the readouts. "Weevils on the loose, huh?"

Hunting Weevils alone is generally dangerous, and while Jack doesn't fear death at their claws, it would be rather inconvenient. Fortunately, he knows just who to call.

April approaches the third Weevil, the one most frightened of her, to quickly get it restrained too. She shouldn't have to hurt the creature, as long as it doesn't try to attack her.

It doesn't, only cowering away from her as she approaches, allowing itself to be captured.

"I think this is the most Weevils I've ever taken in at once," Jack says, spraying the one in the net to make it more docile.

"They react to eachother's pain." April tells him, once all the Weevils are properly restrained.

"I kind of expected that." Still, Jack prefers not to hurt them when he can avoid it. That's one reason he encouraged the development of the Weevil spray. It's unpleasant, but not harmful. Back when he first joined Torchwood, standard procedure was execution of all potential threats. Which included himself, at first.

"It's too bad they aren't intelligent enough to understand why we're doing this to them."

"They just don't have the capacity to understand. I really wish I could help reduce the amount of attacks..."

"Until we get someone who can speak Weevil, I think all we can do is contain and manage them." He's half-joking, because of course Weevils don't have a language. And while he doesn't enjoy playing prison warden, it's necessary to examine each Weevil before tagging, to learn as much as they can.

"I could try to get a better understanding of the Hivemind, if it would help."

[fractured_agent]

Jack nods in gratitude. "Once we get these guys safe and sound inside their cells."

[slayers_desire]

"Certainly. I can handle two of them, if you want to take the third." Her vampiric strength sometimes is an advantage.

[fractured_agent]

"We'll have to come back for the one in the office," Jack agrees. The one in the net is the easiest for him to manage, since it's been freshly sprayed. He cuffs it and takes the net off as he leads it back towards the waterfront.

Inside the office, the Weevil attached to the desk has made a mess of the place, throwing tourism pamphlets and trinkets around the room. It snarls when the door opens, and attempts to lunge at the intruders, coming up short because of its restraints.

April notices the mess that the Weevil made, and cocks an amused eyebrow at Jack. "I can just imagine Ianto will be impressed..."

She takes her two Weevils to the cells, properly restraining them, before heading to the office to deal with the one there.

"Your team will be amazed at everything we accomplished."

"They'll be more amazed I didn't get myself killed doing this with only two people," Jack jokes. Each of the Weevils gets put in a separate cell, to keep track of them better. "There might still be one out there, that wasn't with the main group. You up for one last hurrah?"

"They worry about you... that's sweet." April smiles softly. She hasn't had a lot of team missions in the last few years. Especially being pregnant and then taking care of her children.

A part of her misses it.

A bigger part would never give up the quality time with her children.

"Sure thing!"

"Great. Let's hit the road, then." He reloads the net gun and brings it along, just in case.

The last Weevil is a few blocks away, watching a couple who are out for an evening stroll. They don't notice the alien in the shadows, unaware of the danger to themselves.

"We have to hurry... I sense it is watching prey." April knows how dangerous a situation like that can be.

"Don't wait up for me," Jack encourages her. He knows she's faster than him, and if someone's life is in danger, he'd rather she get there sooner than him.

April sprints off, as fast as she can. She moves quickly to get to the Weevil, hoping to catch it before it goes after its prey.

Jack runs after her, though she quickly leaves him behind. Up ahead, the Weevil begins to charge at the couple on the street, coming at them from behind where they can't see it.

April moves quickly, tackling the creature before it can reach the couple. She has to be careful not to use any noticeable powers, with bystanders so close. But she can at least work to pin the creature underneath her.

The sound of the scuffle draws the couple's attention, and the girl gasps when she sees what looks like two people fighting.

The Weevil goes down hard, but attempts to buck her off, snarling.

April readjusts when the creature tries to buck her off, so she maintain a hold over the Weevil. She delivers a solid punch to its nose, remembering that it was a sensitive spot from her previous battle.

The Weevil howls in pain, and tries to bite at her hand blindly, though some of the fight goes out of it.

Jack finally arrives, toting his net gun. He flashes a grin at the couple. "Sorry to bother you, folks. Enjoy your night." They stare at him in confusion.

The teeth does scratch her hand, but fortunately it is not deep enough to draw blood. Or have any of April's blood get into the Weevil's mouth.

She aims another blow to knock the creature out, so that Jack can capture it properly.

The Weevil yelps again, moaning in submission, too stunned to fight back. Jack quickly snaps restraints around its wrists. "All right, let's get you back to your buddies," he says to the Weevils.

The couple are still watching, but by now the man recognizes Jack from local rumors. "Must be Torchwood," he mutters to his girlfriend. Neither of them know what Torchwood does, but they have a reputation for doing weird things in Cardiff, even though no one's supposed to know about them.

April stands, dusting herself off, when she overhears the comment from the male bystander. Obviously the work of Torchwood is making enough of a difference.

"Do you have a lot of close calls like that?" She asks Jack, as they escort the Weevil back to the Hub.
